A leading academic on bioenergy from Aston University has been announced as a member of Defra’s Trees and Woodlands Scientific Advisory Group.
Professor Patricia Thornley, director of the Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI), will be assisting in providing independent advice to support woodland creation and improve woodland management.
The expert in bioenergy joins a dozen other academics from around the country to provide balanced and scientific advice to the England tree planting programme in ensuring that Defra receives input from a wide range of scientific experts and disciplines.
Professor Thornley said: “Trees are absolutely vital in our plans to tackle climate change. So this group has a really important role to play in ensuring the ambitious Defra programme delivers against Net Zero and wider environmental and socio-economic objectives. I am delighted to be providing scientific input drawing on the knowledge from Aston University and Supergen Bioenergy hub research on the carbon and sustainability impacts of UK trees and woodlands.”
